Octordle FAQ

Quick, accurate answers about how Octordle works on Octordly.org, from the daily puzzle and rejected words to saved statistics, languages, sharing and getting in touch.

About this Octordle

Is this the official Octordle?

No. This is an independent, fan-made version of Octordle, run by the small team behind Octordly.org, which builds free browser word games. The original Octordle is published by Merriam-Webster and Britannica, and Wordle is published by The New York Times. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any of them. Our game is built on the open-source project hello-wordl; the credits page has the details, and the About page explains who we are and how the site is funded.

Is Octordle free to play here?

Yes, completely. There is no account to create, no payment and nothing to download. The site covers its costs with ads placed around the game on our pages. Ads never appear on the boards or the keyboard while you play.

Can I play Octordle in other languages?

Yes. Open the language menu and pick one of 18 languages and dictionaries: English (US or UK), Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Swedish, Irish, Czech, Greek, Turkish, Indonesian or Filipino. Each language has its own list of five-letter words, so the hidden words and the accepted guesses come from that language. The numbers in our guides and on the word list page are for the English game.

Does Octordle work on phones and tablets?

Yes. Octordle runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install. On screens narrower than 1200 pixels the boards are stacked in four rows of two and the on-screen keyboard stays fixed at the bottom of the screen. On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard. Your statistics are kept separately in each browser, so a phone and a laptop each have their own record.

Playing Octordle

How many guesses do I get, and how many do I need?

You get 13 guesses for all eight boards together. The eight words in a game are always different, so a single guess can solve only one board. That means a perfect game takes eight guesses, and you have five spare ones for exploring and mistakes. The same applies if you switch to four- or six-letter words in Settings: the length changes, the 13 guesses do not. The strategy guide explains how to spend them.

Why was my word not accepted?

There are two possible messages. Too short means the word does not have enough letters. Not a valid word means it is not on the game's list of accepted words, which has 12,743 five-letter words but still cannot include every word you know. A rejected word does not use up a guess, so check the spelling and try again. The word list page explains how the lists work.

Is there a Hard Mode or Ultra Hard Mode?

Not at the moment. In some Wordle-style games, Hard Mode makes you keep green letters in place and reuse yellow ones, and Ultra Hard also forces yellow letters to move and gray letters to stay out. Our Octordle does not have a switch for either, so every accepted word is allowed at every turn. You can still play by those rules on your own, or try the stricter house rules suggested in the strategy guide.

Is there a dark mode?

Yes. Switch on Dark Theme in Settings. On your first visit the game follows your device's light or dark setting, and after that it remembers your choice in this browser.

The Octordle daily puzzle and sharing

When does the daily puzzle change?

At midnight according to the clock on your device. Daily Mode chooses its eight words from your device's date, so the new puzzle arrives at your own local midnight, not at one fixed time worldwide. If your device's date is set wrong, you will get the puzzle for that date.

Does everyone get the same daily words?

Yes, as long as the date, the language and the word length are the same. Two players on the same date playing five-letter English Daily Mode get the same eight words, and if they press Start over, the same second game too. Players whose devices are already on the next date will see the next puzzle.

Why did the game start with random words instead of the daily puzzle?

Octordle always opens in Random mode, and Daily Mode is not remembered between visits. Open Settings and switch Daily Mode on to play the day's shared puzzle. A bookmark of the address shown while Daily Mode is on will reopen that specific date, so bookmark the home page instead.

How do I share my result?

When a game ends, the result window shows buttons for X, Reddit, Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat and WhatsApp. Each opens that service in a new tab with a short message and a challenge link filled in; if the timer is on, the message includes your time. Nothing is posted until you confirm it there, and your statistics and guesses are not part of the message. The link does carry a word from your game, though, so after a daily game it is kind to let friends play the daily first.

What is a challenge link?

It is the link in your shared message. It opens a game in which all eight boards hide the same word, taken from board 1 of the game you just finished, so one correct guess solves every board. It is a quick taster for friends. After a challenge, Start over returns to normal random games. A challenge is recorded in the statistics of whoever plays it, like any other game.

Statistics and help

Why did my statistics disappear?

Your statistics are saved only in your browser's local storage on the device you play on. Nothing is stored on our servers, which also means we cannot restore them. Clearing your browsing data or site data, using a private window, or switching to another browser or device starts the statistics from zero.

Which games count towards my statistics?

Every finished game: daily, random and challenge games, at every word length, whether you win, lose or press Give up. Giving up counts as a loss and resets your current streak. Because a challenge can be solved in fewer than eight guesses, a challenge win can set your Best Try below eight. The modes page explains each number.

How do I report a problem or suggest a word?

Use the form on the contact page or email hello@apptao.io. For a bug, tell us what you did, what you expected and what happened, plus your device and browser. For a word, tell us whether it should be accepted as a guess or removed as an answer. We read every message.
