Octordly.org stands on other people's work. These are the open-source projects and the font behind our Octordle, and the games that inspired it.

The game code

Our Octordle is built on hello-wordl by Lynn, an open-source Wordle-style game released under the MIT license. Its core ideas are still at the heart of the game on Octordly.org: the way guesses are checked and colored, the date-based seed behind daily games, challenge links and much of the interface. Our version adapts it to eight boards and thirteen guesses with a split keyboard. The MIT license allows this kind of reuse on the condition that the original copyright and license notice are kept, and we gladly do so: hello-wordl is Copyright © Lynn.

Libraries

The game runs on these open-source libraries, all under the MIT license:

  • React and React DOM, including the React scheduler, Copyright © Facebook, Inc. and its affiliates.
  • object-assign, Copyright © Sindre Sorhus.
  • html-react-parser, used to display the in-game help text.
  • base64-js, used to encode challenge links.

The license notices for React and object-assign are also included with the game's script file.

Font

The site uses the Nunito typeface, designed by Vernon Adams and extended by Jacques Le Bailly, Copyright © The Nunito Project Authors. Nunito is released under the SIL Open Font License, version 1.1, which allows it to be used and shared freely. We host the font files on our own server.

The games that inspired it

Wordle, created by Josh Wardle and now owned and published by The New York Times Company, made the five-letter guessing game with green, yellow and gray tiles famous. Octordle, created by Kenneth Crawford and now published by Merriam-Webster, a Britannica company, had the idea of solving eight such puzzles at once with thirteen guesses. Our fan-made Octordle follows that format.

Octordly.org is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of these people or companies. Wordle and Octordle are trademarks of their respective owners.
