Octordle unlimited: random games
How to start: just open the game. Octordle starts in Random mode every time you load the page, with eight words drawn from the answer list.
When a game ends, press Start over (or Enter) and you get a completely new set of eight words. There is no daily limit, so Random mode is the place to practice openers, try a new plan for board order, or just play one more.
Octordle daily: Daily Mode
How to start: open Settings with the gear icon above the boards and switch on Daily Mode. A new game begins straight away.
Daily Mode picks the eight words from today's date, so everyone playing on the same date, in the same language and with the same word length, gets the same eight words. The date comes from your device's clock, which means the daily puzzle changes at your local midnight.
While a daily game is running, a small line under the boards shows the date code, the word length and the game number, for example seed 20261016, length 5, game 1. When you finish and press Start over, you move on to game 2 of the same day, which is also shared with everyone who gets that far. That makes Daily Mode good for comparing results with friends: agree to play game 1 and compare how many guesses it took.
Challenge links
How to start: finish a game, then tap one of the share icons in the result window.
The link you share opens a special challenge game. In a challenge, all eight boards hold the same word: the word from board 1 of the game you just played. It plays like a single puzzle shown eight times, so the guess that solves one board solves them all. The line under the boards says playing a challenge game, and when it ends, Start over takes your friend back to normal random games.
Challenges are quick, so they make a gentle introduction for a friend who has never played. If a link is damaged so badly that the game cannot read it, the game says the challenge is invalid and starts a random game instead.
Sharing your result
The result window has buttons for X, Reddit, Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat and WhatsApp. Each opens that service in a new tab with a short message and your challenge link already filled in. If the timer is on, the message mentions how long you took. Nothing is posted until you confirm it on the other site, and the game itself does not share your statistics. If you share a daily game, the link carries that day's board 1 word, so friends who have not played yet may want to play the daily first.
Word length
How to start: in Settings, use How many letters in the hidden word and pick 4, 5 or 6.
Five letters is the default and what this site's guides are written for. Four-letter games are quicker, with 778 possible answers and one letter fewer to place on each board. Six-letter games draw from 1,066 answers and accept more than 22,000 words as guesses, so they reward a wide vocabulary. Changing the length starts a new game right away. The rules, the eight boards and the 13 guesses stay the same at every length.
Languages
How to start: open the language menu and pick a language.
Octordle can be played in 18 languages and dictionaries: English (US or UK), Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Swedish, Irish, Czech, Greek, Turkish, Indonesian and Filipino. Each one uses its own list of five-letter words, so it is a good way to practice a language you are learning. The guides and word counts on this site are written for the English game.
Dark theme
How to start: switch on Dark Theme in Settings.
On your first visit the game follows your device's light or dark setting. Once you change it, your choice is saved in the browser and used next time. In the dark theme the board tiles switch to deeper shades of green, yellow and gray that are easier on the eyes at night, but they mean exactly the same thing.
Timer
The timer starts when you type the first letter of a game and stops when the game ends; the result window then reports the total, such as It took you 06:41. It shows minutes and seconds. Tap the clock icon to hide or show the running numbers while you play. To remove the timer completely, switch on Hide Timer in Settings. With Hide Timer on, the message you share no longer mentions a time.
Statistics
How to open: tap the bar-chart icon above the boards.
- Games Played and Games Won: every finished game counts, including losses and games you gave up.
- % of Wins: games won divided by games played, rounded to a whole number.
- Best Try: the fewest guesses you have needed to win a game.
- Current Streak: wins in a row up to your latest game. A loss or a Give up resets it to zero.
- Best Streak: your longest run of wins.
- Best tries distribution: a bar for each winning guess count from 8 to 13, with how many wins took that many guesses and what share of your wins that is.
Daily, random and challenge games all go into the same record, and so do games at every word length. Because a challenge can be solved in fewer than eight guesses, a quick challenge win can set a Best Try below eight. Statistics are stored only in your browser on this device; see the FAQ for what that means if you clear your data.
What is not available
Some multi-board word games offer a hard mode with stricter guessing rules, tournaments or a custom-word game builder. Our Octordle does not have these at the moment. If you want to play by stricter rules, you can set them yourself, and the strategy guide has a few ideas. If there is a mode you would like us to add, tell us on the contact page.
