Terms of Use

The rules for using Octordly.org and the game, written to be short and readable.

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Agreeing to these terms

These terms apply to your use of the website Octordly.org and the Octordle word game on it. By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. Our privacy policy explains how data is handled and forms part of these terms.

Using the site and the game

You may play the game for your own personal, non-commercial enjoyment, as often as you like, on any device. You may link to any page of the site and share challenge links from the game. You may not copy the site's written content or present the site as your own, and you may not use the site in a way that breaks the law or harms other people.

A free, ad-supported service

Octordly.org is free to use. There are no accounts, subscriptions or in-game purchases. The site is paid for by advertising shown on our pages around the game, provided by Ezoic Inc. and its partners. We do not control the content of every ad, and an ad does not mean we endorse the product it shows. Please do not click ads you are not interested in, ask others to click them, or use software or scripts to generate ad views or clicks.

Fair use and conduct

To keep the site working for everyone, you agree not to:

  • use bots, scrapers or other automated tools to play the game, load pages in bulk or copy the word lists;
  • try to break, overload or gain unauthorized access to the site, its server or its contact form;
  • use the contact form or shared links to send spam, harassment, threats or offensive material;
  • alter challenge links or shared messages to carry offensive words, or post them in a way that suggests they come from us.

Challenge links and result messages are created by the game. When you share one, you are responsible for where and how you post it, and for following the rules of the service you post it on.

Independence and trademarks

Octordly.org is an independent website, and the Octordle game on it is a fan-made version. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Merriam-Webster, Britannica or The New York Times Company. Octordle is a trademark of its owner and Wordle is a trademark of The New York Times Company. We use these names only to describe the style of game we offer. The name "Octordly", our site design and our written content belong to us.

Open-source software

The game is based on hello-wordl by Lynn and uses other open-source libraries, including React. That code is used under the MIT license, and its copyright belongs to its authors. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the MIT license gives you over that code. The full list is on our credits page.

Messages you send us

If you send us a bug report, word suggestion or idea, you allow us to use it to improve the game and the site without owing you payment. We will not publish your name or contact details without your permission.

No warranties

We work hard to keep Octordly.org running and accurate, but the site and the game are provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that the site will always be online, free of errors or bugs, or that every word you expect will be accepted. We may change, pause or remove features, word lists or pages at any time. Your statistics are stored only in your browser, and we are not responsible if they are lost.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the site, including lost data, lost statistics or streaks, or problems caused by third-party services such as ads or analytics. Because the service is free, our total liability for any claim connected with the site is limited to the amount you paid us to use it, which is zero. Some laws do not allow these limits; where they apply, the limits apply only as far as the law permits.

Links to other websites

The site and the game contain links to other websites, such as social networks for sharing, open-source projects and our advertising and analytics providers. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices. Visiting them is at your own discretion.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. If you keep using the site after a change, you accept the updated terms.
