Privacy Policy

Plain-language details on what data Octordly.org and its partners collect, why, and the choices you have.

Who we are

This policy covers the website Octordly.org and the Octordle word game on it. Octordly.org is run by a small independent team. If you have a question about your data or want to use any of the rights described below, email us at hello@apptao.io or use the contact form.

In short: the game does not send your games or statistics to us. The data that does leave your device comes from our web server, the contact form if you use it, and the analytics and advertising services described below.

Game data stays in your browser

The game saves a few things in your browser's local storage so the game works the way you left it:

  • your game history, used to calculate the statistics (for each finished game, whether you won and how many guesses it took);
  • your settings, such as dark theme, the hidden timer, whether the clock is shown and, on computers, the full-width and two-row board layouts.

This information stays on your device. It is not sent to us, and we cannot see, restore or delete it for you. You can remove it at any time by clearing the site data for octordly.org in your browser. The daily puzzle is worked out from your device's date inside your browser; we do not receive that date.

The contact form

If you send us a message through the contact page, we receive what you enter: your message, your email address if you choose to give it, and any files you attach. Without an email address we can read your message but cannot reply. To protect the form from spam and abuse, the request passes through an automated check, and we receive your IP address and basic browser information with the message.

We use this information only to answer your message, fix the problem you report and improve the game. We do not add you to a mailing list, and we do not sell your message or share it with advertisers. The same applies if you email us directly.

Server logs

Our server records basic technical details of each request: your IP address, the page or file requested, the date and time, your browser and operating system, and the page that linked to us. We use these logs to keep the site running, investigate errors and detect abuse, not to build profiles.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics, a service of Google LLC, to understand how the site is used: how many people visit and which pages, devices and browsers they use. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects information such as your IP address, device and browser details and the pages you view. We look at the reports in aggregate to decide what to improve, not to identify individual players.

Google processes this information under its own policies at policies.google.com/privacy. You can block or delete analytics cookies in your browser; the game works the same without them.

Advertising

Octordly.org is free because it shows ads. Our advertising is provided by Ezoic Inc. and its advertising partners. Ads appear on our pages around the game, never inside the game itself.

To show ads, Ezoic and its partners use cookies and similar technologies, such as pixels and local storage, and may collect your IP address, information about your device and browser, the pages you visit on this site and how you interact with ads. They use it to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure how ads perform, detect fraud and, where you allow it, personalize ads based on your interests. Some partners may combine this with information collected on other websites.

Where the law requires your consent, for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, a consent banner appears on your first visit. You can accept, reject or choose individual purposes and partners. To change your choice later, use the consent settings link or button that the consent tool shows on the site, or clear your cookies for octordly.org so the banner appears again. If you reject personalized advertising you will still see ads, but they will be less tailored to you.

Read more in Ezoic's privacy policy and see the companies involved in Ezoic's list of advertising partners. The partner details shown below this policy are provided by Ezoic.

Sharing buttons

When a game ends, the result window offers buttons for X, Reddit, Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat and WhatsApp. These are plain links. Nothing is sent to those services unless you click a button; the service then opens in a new tab under its own privacy policy.

Fonts and dictionary links

The site's typeface, Nunito, is served from our own server, so loading it does not send any request to Google Fonts or another font service. After a game, each answer links to Wiktionary; nothing is sent there unless you click a link.

Cookies

Octordle does not need cookies to run; it uses local storage, as described above. Cookies on this site are set by Google Analytics, by Ezoic and its advertising partners, and by the consent tool to remember your choices. If you block or delete cookies, the game still works, but you may be asked for your consent choices again.

Children

Octordly.org is a general-audience word-game site. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information through the contact form, email us and we will delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal information. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and similar jurisdictions, you can ask to access, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, ask us to restrict or stop using it, ask for a portable copy, and withdraw any consent at any time. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. Where these laws apply, we rely on your consent for advertising cookies, on our legitimate interest in running, protecting and measuring the site for server logs, spam checks and usage statistics, and on your request when we answer a message.

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected about you, to ask for it to be deleted, and to opt out of its sale or sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising. Use the choices in the consent tool, or email us and we will help. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.

Google and Ezoic may process information in the United States and other countries under the safeguards described in their own policies. To make a request about data we hold, email hello@apptao.io.

How long we keep information

Messages sent through the contact form or by email are kept as long as we need them to answer you and follow up on your report, and are then deleted. Server logs are kept for a limited period for security and troubleshooting. Your game history and settings stay in your browser until you clear them. Google and Ezoic keep analytics and advertising data according to their own policies.

Changes to this policy

If we change how Octordly.org handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top, and make significant changes clear on the site.
