Octordle: Eight Words, Thirteen Guesses

Octordle hides eight five-letter words and gives you thirteen guesses to find all of them. Every word you type lands on all eight boards at once, so one guess can be a near miss on one board, a solve on another and a blank on the rest. Reading those eight results together and choosing which board to finish next is what makes every game of Octordle play out differently.

Octordly.org is an independent, fan-made version of Octordle and is not affiliated with Merriam-Webster or Britannica, which publish the original Octordle, or with The New York Times, which publishes Wordle.

What the colors mean

  • Green: the letter is in this board's word, in exactly this spot.

  • Yellow: the letter is in this board's word, but somewhere else.

  • Gray: this board's word has no copy of the letter left over once the green and yellow tiles are counted, which usually means the letter is not in it at all.

Eight colors on every key

Each letter key on the on-screen keyboard is split into eight blocks, two across and four down, and each block belongs to one board: top left is board 1, top right is board 2, and so on down to board 8 at the bottom right. A block shows the best color that letter has earned on its board, and untouched letters stay light gray. A key that is gray in seven blocks and yellow in one tells you the letter matters on exactly one board.

How to play Octordle in five steps

  1. Type a word

    Type a word

Enter any valid five-letter word with your keyboard or the on-screen keys, then press Enter. The same guess is written onto all eight boards.

  2. Read every board

    Read every board

Each board colors your guess against its own hidden word, so the same five letters can come out green on one board and gray on the next.

  3. Check the split keys

    Check the split keys

Every letter key is divided into eight small blocks, one per board, showing what that letter has done on each board so far.

  4. Solve all eight in 13 guesses

Solve all eight in 13 guesses

One guess can solve only one board, so a win takes at least eight guesses. That leaves five for exploring and fixing mistakes.

  5. Pick Daily or Random

    Pick Daily or Random

The game opens with random words. Turn on Daily Mode in Settings to play the same eight words as everyone else today.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official Octordle?

No. This is an independent, fan-made version of Octordle, run by the small team behind Octordly.org. The original Octordle is published by Merriam-Webster and Britannica, and Wordle by The New York Times; we are not connected to either.

Is Octordle free to play here?

Yes. There is no account, payment or download. The site is paid for by ads shown around the game, never inside it.

How many guesses do I get?

Thirteen for all eight boards together. Because one guess can solve only one board, you need at least eight, which leaves five guesses of slack.

When does the daily puzzle change?

At midnight on your device's clock. The daily words come from your device's date, so players in other time zones switch to the new puzzle at their own midnight.

Why was my word not accepted?

The guess must have the right number of letters and be in the game's list of accepted words. That list holds more than 12,700 five-letter words, but it will not have every word you know, so check for a typo first and then try another word.

Where are my statistics saved?

Only in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is sent to us, so clearing your browsing data or switching devices starts your statistics from zero.

Can I play Octordle in other languages?

Yes. Pick one from the language menu: English (US or UK), Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Swedish, Irish, Czech, Greek, Turkish, Indonesian or Filipino. Each of the 18 versions has its own list of five-letter words.

Does Octordle work on my phone?

Yes. Octordle runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser. On smaller screens the boards stack in pairs and the keyboard stays at the bottom of the screen.
